Drew University to launch Hispanic
ministry doctoral program in January

In response to requests from Hispanic-American pastors in the
metropolitan New York City area, United Methodist-related Drew
Theological Seminary in Madison, N.J., will launch in January a
three-year specialized doctor of Hispanic ministry degree program.
Sparking the new program was a meeting earlier this year of
40 Hispanic-American pastors from several faith traditions
throughout New York met with officials from Drew University and
United Methodist-related Perkins School of Theology, Southern
Methodist Univesity, Dallas.
Perkins already has a Mexican-American studies program,
directed by the Rev. Minerva Carcano.
The pastors wanted a substantive, quality and relevant doctor
of ministry program that focused on the Latino/Hispanic context of
ministry in the United States, said the Rev. Michael J.
Christensen, director of Drew's doctor of ministry program.
He said the New York pastors requested specialized studies
because of their concern in reaching beyond the church doors to
the people in their communities. The pastors expressed the need
for a curriculum that would address preaching in the Hispanic
tradition, church administration, counseling of Hispanic families,
and community development in the Hispanic/Latino American context.
From the meeting, a team of three bilingual professors
created "a stellar program that is not just a program translated
into Spanish, but a program rooted in Hispanic ministry concerns,"
Christensen said.
The pilot program begins with the first of three foundational
seminars, followed by a professional team-based project,
culminating in a professional paper or thesis.
Three-years of study and academic mentoring will be offered
in a variety of formats, including regional seminars, intensive
January courses, academic mentoring and a three-week intensive
summer session. The enrollment deadline is Nov. 1. For more
information, contact Christensen at (201) 408-3738.
