U.S. government agency grants Africa University
$1.9 million to build new library

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- Africa University is the recipient
of a $1.9 million dollar grant from a U.S. government agency to
build a library.
The United Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry
was informed Oct. 4 of the grant approval by the Office of
American Schools and Hospitals Abroad (ASHA) of the United States
Agency for International Development (USAID).
According to staff member Ken Yamada, this "initial" approval
allows the board to prepare a detailed activity description,
architectural design, cost estimate, financial planning and
construction timetable for ASHA as a basis for negotiation.
Yamada said the grant is $1 million less than the original
request of $2.9 million for projected library construction,
furniture and equipment, professional fees, and program support.
He said that since the grant was less than requested, the
board must develop an adjusted "master" plan for the library
construction in consultation with the building and grounds
committee of the University's board of directors and
administration.
The university directors and administration confirmed during
their 1995 spring meeting that building a library is a high
priority, Yamada said. The directors asked that the Board of
Higher Education and Ministry file a proposal to USAID.
Currently, the library is housed in the university's Multi-
Purpose Teaching Building with "extremely limited space and
facilities," Yamada said. He said the new library building will
allow the university to have "adequate" resources, facilities and
services to support its academic programs.
