Eugene Stockwell, United Methodist
ecumenical leader, dies at 73

                 by United Methodist News Service

The Rev. Eugene Stockwell, 73, a United Methodist pastor,
missionary to Latin America and leader in the world ecumenical
community, died of cancer Oct. 8 at his home in Atlanta.
At the time of his death, he and his wife Margaret had been
on leave as short-term missionaries in Buenos Aires, Argentina,
with the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries.
From 1972 to 1974, Stockwell led the Division of Overseas
Ministries, which included Church World Service, at the National
Council of Churches. While serving there, he traveled to China in
one of the first American delegations allowed into that country.
He also participated in several fact-finding missions to assess
human rights conditions in Uruguay, Argentina, Cambodia and
Nicaragua.
In 1979, he was appointed by President Jimmy Carter to the
"Presidential Commission on World Hunger" and traveled to
Bangladesh on its behalf. During that time, he also served as an
advisor to the United Nation's Conference on Agrarian Reform in
Rural Development in Rome.
In 1984, Stockwell was named director of the Commission on
World Mission and Evangelism for the World Council of Churches in
Geneva, Switzerland. When he retired from the council in 1989, he
assumed the leadership position at the Union Theological Seminary
(ISEDET) in Buenos, Aires, Argentina. The seminary was established
by his father, the Rev. B. Foster Stockwell.
Born Sept. 28, 1923, in Boston, Stockwell grew up in Buenos
Aires. He earned a bachelor's degree from Oberlin College,
graduated from Columbia University Law School in 1948 and received
a Master of Divinity degree from Union Theological Seminary in
1952.
During the 1950s, the Stockwells served as Methodist
missionaries in Salto, Uruguay, where he assisted in founding a
primary school. He joined the denomination's Board of Missions in
1962 as the Latin America area secretary and later was appointed
an assistant general secretary of the World Division.
Stockwell was the author of numerous articles for both church
and secular journals and had several letters printed in The New
York Times. His first book, Claimed by God for Mission, published
in 1966, was used throughout the Methodist Church as a mission
study guide.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Martha
Stockwell-Goering of Cleveland Heights, Ohio; three sons, William
J. of Lexington, Va., Robert F. of Atlanta and Richard R. of
Columbia, S.C. and seven grandchildren.
A memorial service is set for 10:30 a.m. Oct. 9 at Trinity
United Methodist Church in Atlanta. Another memorial service is
planned at 11 a.m. Oct. 26 at Asbury United Methodist Church in
Allentown, Pa. The date for a service in Buenos Aires is yet to be
determined.
Donations may be sent to the Eugene L. Stockwell Memorial
Fund for Projects in Argentina, administered by the United
Methodist Board of Global Ministries, 475 Riverside Dr., New York,
NY 10115.
