Foundation offers
two new scholarship programs

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- The United Methodist Foundation
for Christian Higher Education trustees established two new
scholarship programs for United Methodist students when foundation
trustees met Sept. 21.
The United Methodist Church Matching Scholarship program
challenges local churches to match a $1,000 scholarship for a
student from their congregation to attend a United Methodist
school, college, university or seminary. The program allocation is
$100,000.
The Foundation Scholars for Entering Freshmen program gives
an additional $1000 scholarship to each United Methodist-related
institution and $3,000 for United Methodist seminaries and Meharry
Medical College. That money will be in addition to the current
foundation scholarships provided to seniors and the annual
conference scholarships provided to each annual conference.
An affiliate of the churchwide Board of Higher Education and
Ministry, the 32-year old foundation provides financial assistance
to United Methodist students and United Methodist-related
institutions of higher education.
According to the Rev. George Miller, foundation president and
chief executive officer, these scholarship opportunities "reaffirm
the trustees' commitment to provide assistance to United Methodist
students attending United Methodist-related institutions."
Miller said the foundation, has assets exceeding $28 million.
It has provided 1,302 students with scholarships totalling more
than $1.2 million during the last four years.
