SMU's Perkins School of Theology
to debut new Spanish-language hymnal

DALLAS (UMNS) -- Pastors and musicians serving in Spanish-
language or bilingual congregations will gather at Southern
Methodist University's Perkins School of Theology here Oct. 21-24
to celebrate the publication of a new hymnal, Mil Voces para
Celebrar.
Released earlier this year by the United Methodist Church,
the hymnal includes approximately 400 hymns and choruses
representing a variety of musical styles from Latin America as
well as selections of traditional hymns, translations from
contemporary English hymns and translations from Spanish originals
to English.
Title of the hymnal is a translation of Charles Wesley's "Oh,
For A Thousand Tongues to Sing." Charles Wesley, brother to
Methodism's founder John Wesley, wrote hundreds of hymns many of
which are still popular today.
Of the most recent Spanish-language hymnals produced by
various denominational and interdenominational bodies, Mil Voces
is the most inclusive of Latin American music and the most
responsive to the worship needs of the Hispanic community,
according to C. Michael Hawn, a leader of the hymn festival and
associate professor of sacred music at Perkins.
The seminary is an appropriate venue for the celebration,
Hawn said, because of its relationship to the Rio Grande
Conference, a Spanish-language conference of the United Methodist
Church with congregations in Texas and New Mexico. Perkins also
has a Mexican American Program, headed by the Rev. Minerva
Carcano.
The four-day event will include classes, discussions about
the hymnal, worship services, hymn singing, meals and
opportunities for fellowship.
The celebration will revolve around three classes whose
instructors include the hymnal's editor and a composer and a
musician who collaborated on the new hymnal:
     * Musical styles of Latin America -- Pablo Sosa, a Methodist
musician and composer from Argentina and an authority on church
music in Latin America. His class will focus on the different
musical styles of the hymns and how to present and sing the hymns
more authentically.
     * Sacraments and services in the hymnal -- will be taught by
Raquel Mora Martinez, the hymnal's editor, and her husband, Bishop
Joel Martinez, Lincoln, Nebr. The class will address ways to use
the hymnal for baptism, communion, weddings and funerals.
     * Mil Voces para Celebrar and the Christian Year -- will be
taught by Jorge Lockward, a New York musician who collaborated on
the hymnal. He will deal with the use of the hymnal for baptism,
communion, weddings and funerals.
A $30 registration fee covers a copy of the hymnal, a banquet
meal and class materials. Scholarship assistance is available for
music directors in Spanish-speaking or bilingual churches.
