United Methodist Student
Movement elects leaders

by Kathy Gilbert*

Christy Kniceley, a senior at Marshall University,
Huntington, W.Va., has been elected chairwoman of the United
Methodist Student Movement's Steering Committee.
A new United Methodist Student Movement (UMSM) was formed by
students attending a "Student Forum Plus!" meeting in May.
The forum, established in 1989, is an annual leadership
development conference sponsored by the Campus Ministry Section of
the churchwide Board of Higher Education and Ministry.
Knicely expressed hope that the new student movement would
create communities across the country so that college students
could connect with each other and create their own ministries.
The UMSM is a network of college and university students
active in United Methodist-related campus ministries and in local
church ministries to college students. Students are organized
through statewide, annual conference, jurisdictional and regional
conference gatherings.
The steering committee, assisted by the section on campus
ministry staff, gives direction for the UMSM between annual
meetings, plans the Student Forum and represents the student
movement in ecumenical meetings.
Each jurisdiction is represented on the steering committee by
two students serving two-year alternate terms. Five at-large
members are elected to one-year terms. Elections are held during
the annual Student Forum each May.
Other members of the steering committee include:
     * Danton S. Bankay, Brooklyn Conservatory of Music, Brooklyn,
