Reproduction offers glimpse
of life of circuit rider, bishop

Lancaster, Pa. (UMNS) -- The life and times of a circuit
rider who became the third bishop of the United Brethren in Christ
Church are captured in a reproduction of his journal titled
Christian Newcomer.
The book records the extensive travel and preaching from 1795
to 1830 by Christian Newcomer, who lived from Jan. 21, 1749, to
March 12, 1830.
Published to correspond with the 50th anniversary of the
Evangelical United Brethren Church (EUB) in mid November, the
volume faithfully copies the 330 journal pages published in 1843
and also includes 60 additional pages of information.
Christian Newcomer was edited by the Rev. Abram W. Sangrey
and published by the church's Otterbein District, which
encompasses the area of Newcomer's home.
Bishop George W. Bashore, in the book's preface said,
Newcomer was a "spiritual trailblazer" who offered people with
empty hearts food for life's journey. Bashore, ordained originally
in the E.U.B. church, is a native of Lancaster, Pa., where
Newcomer grew up and began his ministry.
The Rev. Charles Yrigoyen Jr., general secretary of the
United Methodist Commission on Archives and History, has said the
book provides essential information about the geographical
extension of the United Brethren Church and the mission issues
with which it dealt "and offers inspirational reading about one
whose ministry was unsurpassed."
The book is available for $11.95 (and 70 cents tax in
Pennsylvania only) plus $1.25 shipping from the Otterbein
District, 1992 Park Plaza, Lancaster, PA 17601. Eight or more
copies to the same address are $10 each.
