96392 Rural Ministry Grant Recipients Announced

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Thirteen rural ministry projects throughout the United
States have been selected to share $34,000 in grants to strengthen their
ministries.
The "Rebuilding Rural Communities" grants were approved Sept. 20 by
the Rural Ministry Advisory Committee of the National Ministries Division
in Louisville. The grant program was established in 1991 when the 203rd
General Assembly approved the report "The Church: Responding to Rural
America."
The grant recipients (and their presbyteries) are
Rebuilding Rural Caregiving Communities, Stevens Point, Wis.
(Winnebago): $3,000 to train volunteers who will provide respite care,
transportation, basic home repairs, light housekeeping, errand running and
child care in the area.
Camden Community Youth Development, Camden, Ala. (Sheppards &
Lapsley): $3,000 to support the purchase of educational supplies, computer,
printer, sports equipment, field trips, Bibles and hymnbooks for an
after-school tutoring/mentoring project.
Area Christians Together in Service Men's Shelter, Henderson, N.C.
(New Hope): $3,000 to support the creation of a men's shelter in the
county.
Appomattox Court House Presbyterian Day Care Ministry, Appomattox, Va.
(Peaks): $3,000 to support the day-care ministry and purchase equipment.
Ecumenical Center for Youth, Greenwich, N.Y. (Albany): $2,500 to
support the start-up of the center, which will be housed in a restored
village hall.
Caring Fund for Counseling Services, Johnstown, N.Y. (Albany): $1,500
to subsidize counseling fees for low-income persons living in the area.
Four Ps in a Pod and Community Preschool Partnership, Parish, N.Y.
(Cayuga-Syracuse): $3,000 to support the purchase of office and fire safety
equipment for the community preschool center.
Dundee Area Youth Center, Dundee, N.Y. (Geneva): $2,000 to support the
start-up of a youth center in the community.
Parish Nurse Council of Western Maine, Farmington, Maine (Northern New
England): $3,000 to provide start-up funding for the Council, which will
serve persons not otherwise served by the health-care system in the area.
Scotch Presbyterian Church Mental Health Project, Madrid, N.Y.
(Northern New York): $3,000 to support the program that will enhance the
project through family visitations.
Ministry in the North Country Rural Rehab Outreach Worker Ministry,
Potsdam, N.Y. (Northern New York): $3,000 to support the expenses of an
outreach worker and the emergency fund of the ministry.
Tohono O'odham Community Garden Network, Sells, Ariz. (de Cristo):
$3,000 to support a new outreach program directed primarily to young people
that will focus on preserving Tohono O'odham traditions.
Terrell County Recycling Program and Community Restoration, Sanderson,
Texas (Tres Rios): $1,000 to enhance the recycling program in the
community.

Geores, Monmouth, Maine; Lucille Gump, Spokane, Wash.; the Rev. Richard
Poppen, DeSmet, N.D.; Carol Stanley, Gilbert, W.V.; Frank Williams,
Keysville, Ga.; the Rev. Peter Funch, Casper, Wyo.; Carlos Gutierrez,
Phoenix, Ariz.
