INDIANAPOLIS (DNS) -- Funeral services recently were
held for a retired president of the overseas ministries
division of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
Memorial services for the Rev. Robert M. Thomas were
Oct. 27 in Indianapolis. A second service of remembrance was
held in Seattle, Wash. Thomas served as president of the
Disciples' Division of Overseas Ministries from 1969 to
1983.
The retired Disciples executive served congregations in
Chicago and Maywood, Ill., St. Joseph, Mo., and Seattle
before assuming the DOM post. He earned a bachelor of arts
degree from Drury College, Springfield, Mo., and a bachelor
of divinity degree from the University of Chicago Divinity
School.
While president of DOM, Thomas held significant
leadership roles within the National and World Councils of
Churches. He also served on the board of directors for the
Ecumenical Development Cooperative Society.
Survivors include his spouse, Marjorie, who resides in
Indianapolis, and two adult daughters.
Memorial gifts may be given to either the Division of
Overseas Ministries or Northwood Christian Church (Disciples
of Christ) in Indianapolis.
