NATIONAL COUNCIL OF CHURCHES HONORS FIVE ECUMENICAL
EFFORTS

 CHICAGO, Ill., Nov. 15 ---- The National
Council of Churches (NCC) honored five ecumenical
agencies for their innovative projects and programs
at an awards ceremony held during the NCC's Nov. 13-
15 annual General Assembly.

 According to Dr. Kathleen S. Hurty, NCC
Ecumenical Networks Director, the Ecumenical
Recognition Award honors "ways in which churches and
the broader religious community seek to heal
brokenness within human community." Begun in 1991,
the awards lift up commitment, perseverance, passion
and collaboration at the local and regional levels
and present ideas that have worked and can be
enlarged on by others.

 "These awards illustrate shared concerns,
compassion, and creativity around this nation," Dr.
Hurty said at the awards presentation. "They are
but the tip of the iceberg -- modest examples of
magnificent commitment to the one ecumenical
movement and to the wider ecumenism of our life as
people of faith in community."

 Nominations for the ecumenical recognition
awards are sought broadly, Dr. Hurty said. A
committee of the NCC Ecumenical Networks Working
Group then winnows the list and makes
recommendations to the working group. The
selections are made and forwarded to the General
Assembly.

 This year's recipients are:
  The InterReligious Council of Central New
York's Community Wide Dialogue project (Syracuse, N.Y.);
  Ecumenical Ministries of Iowa for its program
Reducing the Risk of Child Sexual Abuse in Your
Church (Des Moines, Iowa);
  The Multi-Faith Festival held by the Long
Island Council of Churches (Hempstead, N.Y.).
  Lincoln (Neb.) Interfaith Council's Asian
Community and Cultural Center;
  Unity Week: Seven Days of Harmony, sponsored
by Tulsa Metropolitan Ministry (Tulsa, Okla.).
