United Methodist communicators'
work recognized with UMAC Awards
WASHINGTON, (UMNS) -- Certificates of merit in more than 50
categories honored the work of United Methodist professional
communicators here Nov. 21 when the United Methodist Association
of Communicators (UMAC) distributed its 1996 awards.
Eight "Award of Excellence" plaques were given to top winners
in the major categories. The awards represented the best overall
work in a particular class or division.
The Leonard M. Perryman Award for Excellence in Special
Promotion went to William R. Richards of United Methodist
Communications, Nashville, Tenn., for "A Circle the Heart Draws."
The Donald Doten Award of Excellence for Writing was given to
Paul Jeffrey, a missionary in Guatemala, for his feature story "To
Walk Where They Walk" and "Hurricane Series." Jeffrey also
received the Award of Excellence for Photography for his photo of
"To Walk Where They Walk."
The Robert F. Storey Award of Excellence for Newspapers was
received by Mark Westmoreland, editor of the Wesleyan Christian
Advocate, newspaper of the North and South Georgia Conferences.
The Award of Excellence for Magazines went to M. Garlinda
Burton, Suzanne Story, Amy Brack and Mike Dubose -- all staff
members of United Methodist Communications -- for Interpreter
magazine.
The Award of Excellence for Electronic Media went to Steve
Horswill-Johnston, media resource center director of the
California-Pacific Annual Conference, for a video/film "A Study in
Contrasts.y"
The Award of Excellence for Artwork went to Shannon Martin
and Ping Lan, both communications personnel in the Texas
Conference, for "Texas Conference."
The Award of Excellence for Newsletters went to Terri Heirs,
Judy Smith, Kathy Gilbert and Bret Haines -- all of the United
Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry staff -- for
Colleague.
Conducted annually, the awards certificates and plaques are
presented at the association's annual meeting in the fall. The
Rev. Alvin J. Horton, Richmond, Va. is UMAC president.
