Harper installed as eighth
dean of Upper Room Chapel

by Heather Peck*

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- The Rev. J. Steven Harper, author,
Christian leader and director of a church leadership ministry, was
installed as the eighth dean of The Upper Room Chapel, Nov. 20.
More than 70 people gathered in the chapel here, to
participate in the installation service.
Harper, 49, replaces the interim dean, retired United
Methodist Bishop Rueben Job.
"I am very blessed and fortunate to continue in a role where
worship is encouraged as the life of our community," Harper said.
"This job meshes with my faith in that I see worship as the key
event on the life and formation of a community."
As dean of the chapel, Harper will coordinate and oversee all
worship services. He will serve in this position in addition to
other responsibilities as director of the Pathways Initiative, a
new ecumenical effort by The Upper Room to support, educate and
bring together church leaders. He has served as the Pathways
director since June 1996.
A clergy member of the Northwest Texas Annual Conference. He
is a graduate of Duke University, Durham, N.C., Asbury Theological
Seminary, Wilmore, Ky., and McMurry College, Abilene, Texas.
Author of 10 books and numerous magazine articles, Harper was
the founder and director of Shepherd's Care, a ministry in
Lexington, Ky., designed for the spiritual care of church leaders.
The ministry closed after Harper relocated to the Upper Room.
The Upper Room and Upper Room Chapel are units of the
churchwide Board of Discipleship.
