Arkansas college official appointed
president of Tennessee university

                 by United Methodist News Service

     W. Ellis Arnold, III, an official at United Methodist-related
Hendrix College, Conway, Ark., has been named president of Lambuth
University, Jackson, Tenn.
Arnold, 39, vice president of development and general council
at Hendrix, will assume his duties at 150-year-old United
Methodist-related Lambuth Jan. 1. The appointment was announced
Nov. 15 by the university Board of Trustees
"We have sought a new president to take us into the next
century, not only with our quality intact but also with a new
level of academic excellence," said Brooks Clayton, chairman of
the Lambuth University trustees. "We have found that president in
Ellis Arnold," he declared.
A 1979 graduate of Hendrix College, Arnold earned his
doctorate from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock School of
Law in 1982. He practiced law in Little Rock before joining the
Hendrix College staff in 1990.
A member of Grace United Methodist Church, Conway, Ark., he
has served as a Conway District Trustee.
During Arnold's tenure at Hendrix the college's endowment
grew from $52 million to $92 million; money was raised for a new
library and campus center; and a charitable trust was established.
Jeanne Varnell, chairwoman of the search committee, said it
was essential that the new president of Lambuth University possess
a commitment to the mission and values of a United Methodist-
related liberal arts institution.
