Interim executive named to head
United Methodist Men commission

                by United Methodist News Service

An interim executive will lead the new churchwide Commission
on United Methodist Men during its first months as an independent
church program agency.
Allen L. Brown of New Orleans, who retired after 16 years as
a United Methodist Men's executive in 1994, will serve as chief
executive of the nine-member staff from Jan. 1 until a permanent
executive is chosen.
The 24-member commission will meet Feb. 16-17, and is expected
to nominate the agency's first permanent general secretary during
that meeting. A search committee chaired by Bishop Joe Pennel of
the Richmond Area, has been screening applications since October.
The 1996 General Conference in Denver made United Methodist
Men a free-standing program agency beginning Jan. 1, 1997. Before
that it was part of the denomination's Board of Discipleship.
The new commission will coordinate men's ministries across the
denomination including the United Methodist Men's Congress July 11-
13 at Purdue University, West Lafayette, Ind.
Bishop Ray Owen, San Antonio, commission president, said, in
Brown "we have someone who knows all aspects of United Methodist
Men's ministry and can give immediate direction to the staff ... "
