April event to promote
global worship, music
by United Methodist News Service
"Global Praise '97," an event promoting the use of
international elements in worship and music, is planned April 7-9
in Overland Park, Kan.
It precedes Global Gathering III, April 10-13 in nearby
Kansas City, Mo. Both events are sponsored by the United Methodist
Board of Global Ministries.
The Rev. S.T. Kimbrough, the board's associate general
secretary for mission evangelism, said Global Praise '97 is
designed for church musicians, pastors and other people who lead
worship.
He noted that the most recent edition of The United Methodist
Hymnal "is the first substantial repository of the global songs of
our church."
As a denomination, he added, "we are a people who say our
song is essential to who we are as a worshipping community."
Global Praise, with its workshops and services, will focus on
"shorter, singable forms" of songs from many cultures "that all of
us can access," according to Kimbrough.
The international faculty includes Kimbrough, Racquel Achon,
Melva Costen, Marilyn Hofstra and Carlton Young of the United
States; Tom Colvin, Scotland; Ivor Jones, England; Ludmila
Garbuzova, Russia; Per Harling, Sweden; Hartmut Handt, Germany;
David Pluess, Switzerland; I-to Loh, Taiwan; Patrick Matsikinyiri,
Zimbabwe; Simei Monteiro, Brazil; George Mulrain, Trinidad/Tobago
and Pablo Sosa, Argentina.
The registration deadline is March 1. For more information,
call (212) 870-3914.
