receive grants from mission board

by Wesley S.T. Niles*

NEW YORK (UMNS) -- Eight grants for "Enabling AIDS Ministry"
have been awarded by the United Methodist Board of Global
Ministries' Health and Welfare Ministries Department.
The recipients of the grants, totaling $7,500, minister to
people affected by the HIV/AIDS pandemic in a variety of ways.
Topeka AIDS Project of Topeka, Kan., supports emergency
assistance. St. Paul's PDQ AIDS Program in Denver provides home
furnishings to poor people living with AIDS.
The Pediatric Buddy Program for Children Affected by HIV/AIDS
in Albany, N.Y., offers recreation for children and respite for
their families one Saturday afternoon each month. The children are
either ill themselves or have family members who are ill.
Care of the Soul in Ellensburg, Wash., provides a retreat on
the Lazy F Ranch, where there are opportunities for spiritual
renewal and nurture for caregivers helping individuals living with
HIV/AIDS.
Common Ground in Atlanta offers meals, craft activities,
fellowship and opportunities for meditation and spiritual nurture.
Friendship Ministries, Inc., in Macon, Ga., facilitates local
implementation of the Black Church Week of Prayer for the Healing
of AIDS.
AIDS Pastoral Care Network in Chicago provides chaplaincy
services to approximately 500 HIV/AIDS-impacted people at Cook
County Hospital. Quality of Life Retreat in Lubbock, Texas, allows
adults living with HIV/AIDS to have some time away from their
usual routines at three-day retreats.
Donations to support the Enabling AIDS Ministry grants can be
made to Advance No. 982215-6 through any local United Methodist
Church. For more information, call 212-870-3909.
