Flood victims
need support

                by United Methodist News Service

As people in the northwest return to their flood-soaked
homes, "they're going to need a lot of support," according to the
Rev. Randy Andersen.
Andersen, pastor of First United Methodist Church in
Marysville, Calif., has two families from his congregation whose
houses "were completely wiped out." Another had a family farm of
90 years destroyed and several other church families also
suffered home damage.
Six families from First United Methodist Church in Yuba City
also were flooded out, according to the Rev. John Sheppard,
pastor. Those families live in nearby Yuba County.
The Rev. Craig Paterson, disaster response coordinator for
the United Methodist California-Nevada Annual (regional)
Conference, called the massive early January flooding "a
conference-wide disaster."
On Jan. 7, conference officials discussed the need for
financial assistance through the United Methodist Committee on
Relief (UMCOR) and volunteers for cleanup and rebuilding
projects.
"It's going to be a long process," he explained. "We're
inviting people to start planning now to be part of the
recovery."
But Paterson cautioned volunteers to have patience, noting
that help will be needed most in late spring through next fall.
People interested in registering as a volunteer can call
UMCOR's Volunteer Line at (800) 918-3100.
Financial donations can be made to UMCOR Advance No.
