Eight steps lead
to ordination as deacon

     Diaconal ministers who desire to be ordained as a deacon in
full connection in the United Methodist Church must fulfill eight
requirements to become eligible.
     According to paragraph 365 of the 1996 Book of Discipline, the
denomination's book of law, diaconal ministers who want the status
of ordained deacon must:
     1.  be in good standing with the annual conference;
     2. have completed three years in an approved service
appointment;
     3. apply in writing to the conference board of ordained
ministry for transfer of their credentials;
     4. complete a continuing formation and education program
developed by the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry;
     5. demonstrate an understanding of the call to the order of
the deacon;
     6. fulfill and exemplify the definition of the ordained
deacon;
     7. meet the educational requirement for diaconal ministry or
demonstrate competence and experience determined to be equivalent
by the Section on Deacons and Diaconal Ministries of the General
Board of Higher Education and Ministry;
     8. receive a two-thirds affirmative vote of the clergy session
of the annual conference.
     When all requirements are met, the bishop will ordain the
deacon with laying on of hands at the service of ordination at the
annual conference session and will provide deacon's credentials
documenting full membership in the conference.
