Constance Nelson Barnes named
to religion and race staff

     WASHINGTON (UMNS) -- The United Methodist Commission on
Religion and Race has named Constance Nelson Barnes of Columbia,
Mo., to an associate general secretary's position effective March
10.
     Barnes has been employed by the South Carolina Conference of
Branches of the NAACP (National Association for the Advancement
of Colored People) since 1988 and has been its interim executive
director from November 1995 to the present.
     In assuming the position previously held by Elaine Jenkins,
Barnes will be working with the Southeastern Jurisdiction and
will take part in the commission's mandate to monitor the
agencies, conferences and institutions of the United Methodist
Church.
     She will also be staff liaison with the church's African
American constituency, including working with Black Methodists
for Church Renewal (BMCR), Black Community Developers and the 
Strengthening the Black Church focus.
     Other duties include developing resources for combatting
racism and building inclusiveness and working with the National
youth Ministries Organization.
     Previously she had worked in the Neighborhood Legal
Assistance Program in Moncks Corner, S.C., and for the Reliable
Electric Company in St. Stephen, S.C.
     A graduate of South Carolina State University, Barnes is a
part-time student at Lutheran Theological Southern Seminary. She
earlier earned an associate's degree in management at Trident
Technical College.
     She; her husband, Lionel; and their 12-year-old daughter,
Aprel, are active members of Bluff Road United Methodist Church
in Columbia.
