Four United Methodist-related seminaries
awarded computer grants

                 by United Methodist News Service

Four United Methodist-related seminaries are among 30
theological schools in North America participating in a $6.8
million program from a major foundation to encourage the use of
computers to teach theology in creative ways.
The Indianapolis-based Lilly Endowment Inc., is funding the
program to encourage cooperation among seminary librarians,
faculty members, computer technicians, media specialists and
administrators to use emerging technology.
Each school will receive $10,000 planning grants to assemble
the people, knowledge and expertise to submit a proposal to Lilly
Endowment. Implementation grants up to $200,000 will be awarded
later in the year.
The four United Methodist-related seminaries participating in
the Library Technology for Theological Teaching program are:
Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, Evanston, Ill; the
Interdenominational Theological Center, which includes Gammon
Theological Seminary, Atlanta; Methodist Theological School in
Ohio, Delaware, Ohio; and United Theological Seminary, Dayton,
Ohio.
According to Craig Dykstra, Lilly's vice president for
religion, many of the 30 schools have the technology already in
place. He said the problem most of them face is "how to make the
best use of it, how to keep it updated and most importantly, how
to integrate this new technology to serve the central purpose
needs of a seminary -- namely teaching and learning."
