NCC Earth Day mailing requests
letters to President Clinton

          by United Methodist News Service

United Methodist congregations are among those receiving a
National Council of Churches (NCC) mailing asking that letters and
pictures of children be sent to President Clinton.
As preparation for Earth Day on April 22, the letters would
call on the President to "protect our children's and
grandchildren's future" from the dangers of climate change. The
protection would come by raising automobile fuel economy standards
to decrease harmful emissions responsible for climate change.
In addition to the action alert, the mailing includes a
church bulletin insert and a five-session study guide for
congregations, "It's God's World: Christians, the Environment and
Climate Change."
The resources point to the dangers of climate change that is
brought on by an increase in carbon dioxide that traps the sun's
rays in the atmosphere like a blanket. The dangers of the human-
made phenomenon include the development of new and erratic weather
patterns, loss of various species, spread of infectious diseases,
damaging economies and rising sea levels.
