Music, worship leaders
to meet in Houston

     NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- Nearly 1,000 music and worship
leaders are expected at a biennial convocation at the University
of Houston July 14-19.
     One of the most popular national gatherings in the church
since the mid-1950's, the convocation is sponsored by the
Fellowship of United Methodists in Music, Worship and Other Arts.
     Activities are planned for people of all denominations
including clergy and laity, volunteer and professional musicians,
educators, worship work area leaders, liturgical artists, and
dancers. Childcare will be available for a charge. The
convocation program will include activities beginning with
kindergartners.
     "Worship Journeys" is the theme for the five-day event.
Chairing the planning committee is John Buehler, Baker University.
     Brad Kisner, Director of Music and Fine Arts at First United
Methodist Church in Corpus Christi, Texas, is president of the
Fellowship.
     Houston is the only city that will have hosted the
convocation more than once. The 1971 convocation was held on the
University of Houston campus.
     Among the more than 30 leaders for the event will be:
     * Alice Parker, Hawley, Mass., hymnody;
     * Jane Marshall, Perkins School of Theology at Southern
Methodist University in Dallas, choral conducting;
     * Sandra Willetts, University of Alabama, Tuscaloosa, choral
conducting masterclass;
     * Carla DeSola, Pacific School of Religion, Berkeley, Calif.,
liturgical dance;
     * David Hurd, General Theological Seminary, New York, organ
masterclasses;
     * Margaret Tucker, First Congregational Church, Houston,
handbells;
     * Corinne Ware, Samaritan Counseling Center. St. Joseph, Mo.,
Spiritual Growth for the church;
     * John Holbert, Perkins School of Theology, Southern
Methodist University, Dallas, daily Bible study, "Using the
Psalms";
     * Robert Webber, School of Theology, Wheaton (Ill.) College,
blended worship styles.
     Directing the conference youth choir will be Thomas Brown,
Covenant Presbyterian Church, Austin, Texas. Directing the
conference children's choir will be Judy Britts, Santa Rosa
(Calif.) Christian School.
     Courses will be offered on a wide range of topics such as
fabric arts and design, the new Hispanic hymnal and hymn writing.
     The Houston Bronze, an all-star area handbell choir of
ringers and directors, will present a free pre-convocation concert
Sunday, July 13 in the Houston Room of the University Center.
     Each morning all participants will gather for Bible study and
each evening for worship. The worship services will represent a
variety of styles from traditional to contemporary. Included will
be an English choral evensong and a service that originated with
the Taize religious community in France.
     An extensive display of resources will be available for
purchase. For more information, contact David Bone, Nashville,
Tenn., (615) 749-6875.
