Peace with Justice Grants
focus on labor rights issues

WASHINGTON (UMNS) -- Worker justice is a factor in three of
the five Peace with Justice grants awarded here recently. The five
grants total $12,500.
Money for the awards comes from the annual Peace with Justice
Sunday Offering to be taken in United Methodist Churches on May 25
this year.
At the March meeting, the Peace with Justice Work Area of the
United Methodist Board of Church and Society decided to make these
awards annually in the future. Deadline to apply for the next
round of grants is Jan. 30, 1998.
The three labor-related 1997 grants were awarded to the
Kansas East and West Annual Conferences, the National Farm Worker
Ministry in Chicago, and the National Interfaith Committee for
Workers Justice in Chicago.
Kansas East and West Conferences were given $3,500,
contingent upon the conferences raising $1,500 from other sources.
The resultant $5,000 is earmarked for establishing a program of
open dialogue on a variety of labor-related issues that could
engage and serve working people.
The $2,500 grant to the National Farm Worker Ministry will
aid the National Council of Churches-related organization in
providing organizing, advocacy and support for farm workers and
farm worker rights. That office coordinates United Methodist and
other church-based programs regarding farm workers.
National Interfaith Committee for Worker Justice, with
offices in Chicago, will receive $1,500 for its Poultry Workers'
Justice Project. This project seeks to improve wages, benefits and
working conditions of the more than 200,000 U.S. poultry workers,
many of whom are African-American women and Latinos.
A grant of $2,500 was awarded to the Black Clergywomen of the
United Methodist Church for a convocation for clergy women of
African descent to share in worship, networking, strategizing and
workshops.
Calvary-Casa del Pueblo United Methodist Church received a
$2,500 grant to develop a multi-faceted community-based
empowerment project around health and wholeness issues.
Educational training and materials will be created enabling the
Latino community to advocate for health care.
