Education foundation names scholarship
in honor of Judicial Council president

     NASHVILLE (UMNS) --  Nearly 30 years on the United Methodist
Church's supreme court and service as a trustee of several
educational institutions has been honored by a scholarship named
in honor of Thomas H. Matheny.
     Matheny of Hammond, La., will be recognized by the United
Methodist Foundation for Christian Higher Education April 18 at
Dillard University. The scholarship will pay tribute to his
accomplishments including four terms on the Judicial Council of
The United Methodist Church. He has been president of the council
since 1976. He also has served on the board of trustees of
American University, Washington, D.C., Centenary College,
Shreveport, La., Iliff School of Theology, Denver, Colo., and the
former Scarritt College, Nashville, Tenn.
     The scholarship will benefit students attending two Louisiana
United Methodist-related institutions -- Centenary College in
Shreveport and Dillard University, in New Orleans. The award also
will pay tribute to Matheny's 18 years of service on the board of
trustees for the United Methodist Foundation for Christian Higher
Education. He has been named a lifetime trustee.   
     The United Methodist Foundation for Christian Higher
Education raises, manages, and distributes scholarship funds for
United Methodist schools, colleges, universities and seminaries.
     Matheny holds honorary doctorates from Centenary College,
DePauw University and Oklahoma City University. He has taught at
Holy Cross College of New Orleans and at Southeastern Louisiana
University.
