PHILADELPHIA - The American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) joins with a
nationwide network of Arab-American organizations, church and Jewish peace
groups, and Muslim associations in organizing a teach-in on March 12 to
protest Israeli plans to build a new Jewish settlement, called Har Homa, on
Jabal Abu Ghneim in occupied Arab East Jerusalem. Teach-ins on the
consequences of building this settlement will be held in over 100 cities
throughout the country this same day. Representatives from participating
organizations will also speak at a news conference at the National Press
Club in Washington, D.C. earlier that afternoon.

The Philadelphia teach-in will include Ian Lustick, professor of political
science at the University of Pennsylvania and a former Middle East analyst
for the State Department; Lisa Hajjar, professor of sociology at Swarthmore
College and an editorial board member for Middle East Report (MERIP); Judith
Chomsky, a Philadelphia attorney who has worked on cases involving human
rights abuses against Palestinians and is a cooperating attorney with the
Center for Constitutional Rights; and Jim Fine, clerk of AFSC's national
Middle East Peace Education Committee and policy committee member of the
Friends Committee on National Legislation.

The Philadelphia event is sponsored by the AFSC. AFSC-related events are
planned in Atlanta, Cambridge, Chicago, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Seattle,
and Washington, D.C.

Other organizers of the national campaign include the American-Arab
Anti-Discrimination Committee, American Muslim Council, Jewish Committee for
Israeli-Palestinian Peace, American-Israeli Civil Liberties Coalition,
Episcopal Peace Fellowship, National Association for Arab Americans, the War
Resisters League and others.
