SEMINARY TECHNOLOGY GETS BOOST

Three of the eight seminaries of the Evangelical Lutheran Church
in America will benefit from grants awarded by the Lilly
Endowment, Indianapolis, to help theological schools develop
technologies for teaching and learning.  The foundation named 30
U.S. seminaries to take part in the $6.8-million Library
Technology for Theological Teaching Program, including Luther
Seminary, St.  Paul, Minn., the Lutheran School of Theology at
Chicago and Trinity Lutheran Seminary, Columbus, Ohio.  Each
school receives $10,000 for research and planning.  Grants of
about $200,000 for implementation may be awarded later this year.
The program is meant to encourage cooperation among librarians,
faculty members, computer technicians, media specialists and
administrators in developing creative ways to enhance theological
learning.  "Many of the leading schools have the technology in
place," said Craig Dykstra, Lilly Endowment's vice president for
religion.  "The problem most face is how to make the best use of
it, how to keep it updated and, most importantly, how to
integrate this new technology to serve the central purpose needs
of a seminary -- namely, teaching and learning."
