         Margin of Approval Grows in Amendment B Voting;
         Approval of COCU Amendment Falls Further Behind

                      by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--With voting on Amendment B -- the so-called "fidelity and
chastity" amendment -- well past the halfway point, the margin of approval
for the measure is growing.

     And affirmative votes for Amendment C, the enabling amendment for
Presbyterian participation in the Consultation on Church Union, or COCU,
have fallen further behind negative votes in voting tabulated as of March
11.

     In the official tally recorded by the Office of the General Assembly
(OGA), the voting on Amendment B ("fidelity and chastity") stands at 62
affirmative and 44 negative. The tally on Amendment C is 36 affirmative,
56 negative, with two "no action." A majority of the 171 presbyteries --
86 -- must vote in the affirmative for the amendments to be incorporated
into the "Book of Order."

     To ensure complete accuracy, the Presbyterian News Service will report
only those presbyery votes that have been formally filed with OGA. To
date, numerous presbyteries in addition to those listed have voted, but
their votes are not yet official because they have not been filed.
