Higher Education directors affirm
Methodist Student Movement growth

by James Noseworthy*

     SAN FRANCISCO (UMNS) -- Growing strength of the United
Methodist Student Movement and the denominations student outreach
were affirmed here March 14-16 by directors of the United
Methodist Board of Higher Education and Ministry's Division of
Higher Education.
     Division members received a report from Christy Kniceley,
chairwoman of the student movement's steering committee, regarding
the growth of annual conference student movements and plans for
the 1997 Student Forum, to be held May 22-25, in Winter Park,
Colo.
     Division members visited the Wesley Foundation at the
University of California at Berkeley where students spoke of the
program's effectiveness. The ministry, which recently reopened,
features a strong relationship with local churches in the area.
     George Miller, president of the United Methodist Foundation
for Christian Higher Education, announced that the Rev. Odette
Lockwood-Stewart, campus minister at the university, will receive
the 1997 Campus Minister of the Year award. The award provides a
$5,000 grant for the campus ministry's program.
     Division members discussed pending federal proposals for
student financial aid and their relationship to historic United
Methodist concerns about access and opportunity in education. The
staff was asked to prepare a guide for board members to use in
writing members of Congress regarding their financial aid
concerns, and to include regular suggestions for action in the
newsletter public policy UPDATE.
     In other actions, the division:
     * approved a $1,000 Ethnic In-Service Training grant for the
Charles L. Johnson Internship program in the South Carolina Annual
Conference;
     * approved 28 grants totaling $35,900 for campus ministry
efforts related to the development of United Methodist student
movements and the development of partnerships with local
congregations;
     * heard plans for the 1997 Lina McCord Intern program where
students from the historically black United Methodist-related
colleges visit annual conferences across the nation;
     * encouraged staff to work with the Division of Ordained
Ministry to develop a program and electronic technology for
continuing education of clergy as well as other programs to link
the global family of United Methodist-related institutions;
     * directed staff to encourage the study of Education: The
Gift of Hope, a document produced by the Board of Higher Education
and Ministry and approved for study by the 1996 General
Conference;
     * requested the division staff to meet with representatives
of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries' Women's
Division to learn of their efforts to develop campus chapters of
United Methodist Women and explore possible cooperation;
     * learned that the "Dollars for Scholars" program of the
United Methodist Foundation for Christian Higher Education, which
matches local church student grants with foundation dollars, is a
resounding success;

public policy in the United Methodist Board of Higher Education
and Ministry's Division of Higher Education in Nashville, Tenn.
