John Schol leaving Board of Global Ministries
staff as urban and shalom ministries director

NEW YORK (UMNS) -- The Rev. John R. Schol will leave his
position as director of urban and shalom ministries for the United
Methodist Board of Global Ministries here June 29 to become pastor
of West Chester United Methodist Church in the Eastern
Pennsylvania Annual Conference.
Schol joined the board staff in 1993 and has led the
development of the Communities of Shalom Initiative and the new
churchwide urban ministry plan, "Holy Boldness."
Under his leadership, 146 Shalom urban and rural sites in 30
annual conferences have been developed. These sites engage
congregations and communities in rebuilding and renewing community
life based on the biblical principles of shalom.
In the field of urban ministry, Schol organized more than
2,000 people across the country to develop a dynamic urban
ministry plan adopted at the 1996 General Conference. Today there
are several new resources for urban ministry including a two-year
Holy Boldness Academy. Schol also was responsible for
reinstituting National Urban Convocations. The next convocation,
planned for San Francisco Nov. 22-25, will attract more than 1,500
people from around the world. Schol will provide staffing for the
event through November 1997.
"It will be hard to leave the urban and shalom work at the
general church level," Schol said. "The work has been rewarding
and fulfilling and I have been fortunate to have worked with
outstanding people across the country and around the world."
Schol cited a heavy travel schedule and the amount of time
away from his family as his reason for leaving the board staff.
