United Methodists arrested
at aircraft carrier protest

     NEW YORK (UMNS) -- Five members of Washington Square United
Methodist Church here and about 30 other Christians were arrested
and charged with criminal trespass on Good Friday at the USS
Intrepid Museum.
     They were part of a Stations of the Cross Peace Walk across
Manhattan, sponsored annually by Pax Christi Metro New York, a
Roman Catholic peace organization.
     The group passed through the museum's gates to call for its
closing and offer prayers for peace.
     Arrested were the Rev. Schuyler Rhodes, pastor, Courtney
Angermeier, Mark Granfors-Hunt, Rebecca Pridmore and Sara
Sterling. Most of the peace walkers were released several hours
later and await a court date.
     Anchored on the Hudson River, the museum's centerpiece is the
World War II-era USS Intrepid aircraft carrier, also a launching
site during the Vietnam War.
     Rhodes declared that transforming a site of death and
violence into a tourist attraction "is, at the very least,
immoral" and called the glorification of the military in a time of
social need "shameful and sinful."
