Diaconal ministers receive
awards for doctoral studies

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- Three diaconal ministers preparing
for careers in Christian education are receiving a total of
$15,000 in awards from the United Methodist Board of Higher
Education and Ministry's Division of Ordained Ministry to help
support their doctoral studies.
     N. Lynne Westfield, a diaconal minister from Philadelphia,
Pa., is the second recipient of the $5000 Rosalie Bentzinger
Graduate Award, named in honor of a retired executive of the
board.
Westfield, in her third year at Union Institute, Cincinnati,
Ohio, hopes to combine religious education and ministry in the
local church.
Two other diaconal ministers, Virginia A. Lee, and Wanda J.
Stahl, each have been awarded $5,000 Diaconal Advance Graduate
Fellowships by the division.
The fellowship began in 1986 to help diaconal ministers
prepare for careers as seminary teachers and administrators of
United Methodist church-related agencies. The total amount for
fellowships was increased to $10,000 this year and expanded to
include ordained deacons enrolled in doctoral programs focusing on
service in a variety of church-related ministries. The ordained
deacon is a new order of ministry created by the 1996 United
Methodist General Conference.
Lee, a graduate of the Divinity School, Duke University, is
enrolled in Presbyterian School of Christian Education, Richmond,
Va. She is preparing to teach Christian education at an
institution of higher education while also working with local
congregations.
Stahl of South Portland, Maine, is enrolled in the doctoral
program at Boston College. She is a graduate of the Boston
University School of Theology.
According to Jimmy Carr, a staff executive in the board's
section on deacons and diaconal ministries, recipients of the
Bentzinger and Diaconal Advance awards have given significant
leadership in the church as diaconal ministers.
"As they complete their doctoral studies and connect seminary
teaching and ministry in the local church they will have the
opportunity to make both more effective" Carr said.
