GENERAL COUNCIL OF UFMCC COMPLETES 1997 SEMI-ANNUAL SESSION;
PREPARES TO DOUBLE MEMBERSHIP IN A DECADE

Los Angeles -- To further its goal of doubling denominational membership in a
decade, the General Council of the Universal Fellowship of Metropolitan
Community Churches (UFMCC) held its semi-annual session in Los Angeles March
11-18, 1997.
Currently with more than 40,000 members and adherents, UFMCC is the world's
largest Christian denomination with an affirming, supportive ministry to the
gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered communities.
General Council tasks included the drafting of new ministry priorities,
implementation of new budgeting procedures as mandated by the 1995 UFMCC
General Conference, planning for the upcoming UFMCC General Conference in
Australia, and preparation of strategies to reach the denomination's goal of
doubling membership in a decade.
UFMCC continues to experience significant worldwide growth. The denomination
is currently comprised of more than 300 local congregations in 19 countries.
With a combined annual budget in excess of $10 million, the UFMCC churches
comprise the largest predominantly gay and lesbian organization in the world.
"In 1995, I called for UFMCC to embrace the task of doubling our
denomination's membership within a decade," said the Rev. Elder Troy Perry,
founder and moderator of the 28-year old denomination. "The significant work
by the UFMCC General Council this week moves us closer to realizing that
 goal," he added.
The UFMCC General Council is composed of a Board of International Elders as
well as the denomination's District Coordinators.
The Council's reports and recommendations will be presented at UFMCC General
Council XVIII in Sydney, Australia July 20-25, 1997.
