May symposium focuses
on African-American churches

               by United Methodist News Service

A symposium on building and rebuilding mission-based churches
in African-American communities is planned May 15-17 in Chicago.
Sponsored by the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries,
the event is aimed at pastors, lay people and annual conference
church extension leaders.
Topics will include the use of strategic planning,
development of leadership and small groups for growth, application
of demographics and surveys, creation of relevant, dynamic
ministries and how to deal with property and construction issues.
Four African-American pastors experienced in new church
development will lead much of the discussion. They are the Rev.
Joe Connelly of Baton Rouge, La.; the Rev. Larry Martin, Monroe,
La.; the Rev. Charlotte Abram, Omaha, Neb.; and the Rev. Anthony
Hunt, Bel Air, Md.
The four are co-authors of Building Hope: New Church
Development in the African-American Community, a new 32-page
booklet published by the board.
Bishop Jonathan Keaton of North Canton, Ohio, chairman of the
coordinating committee for the denomination's Strengthening the
Black Church initiative, will discuss that committee's work.
Bishop Joseph Sprague of Chicago, chairman of the national shalom
ministries committee, will be the keynote speaker.
Other presenters are the Rev. Philemon Titus of Detroit, a
congregational development consultant; and Clinton Parker,
executive secretary of new church development for the board.
The registration fee is $239. For more information, call
Ingrid Hall at 212-870-3860.
