Grants awarded to five campus 
ministers for advanced study

     NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS)--Five campus ministers who are
pursuing doctorates will receive up to $12,500 in assistance as
the 1997-98 recipients of the Baker Graduate Awards.
     Named in honor of the late Bishop James C. Baker, the annual
award is issued by the United Methodist Board of Higher Education
and Ministry's Office of Loans and Scholarships. It is given to
campus ministers who are continuing their education either through
a full-time degree program or certification or in a certified
non-degree program or independent studies program.
     The 1997-98 recipients are:
      *Guy R. Brewer, area director for Miami Campus Ministries in
Coral Gables, Fla. He is working toward a doctorate of ministry
degree at Asbury Theological Seminary in Kentucky. Before entering
campus ministry in 1993, he was a local church pastor in the
Florida and North Georgia annual conferences.
     * John Mark Forrester, the United Methodist campus minister
at Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn. He plans to begin
doctoral degree work at Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur,
Ga. this fall. 
     * Kristen J. Leslie, full-time doctoral degree candidate at
Claremont (Calif.) School of Theology. She served as a pastoral
psychotherapist at the Clinebell Institute. She plans to graduate
in May 1998.
     * William D. Mills, pastor at the Wesley Foundation at
Eastern New Mexico University, Portales, New Mexico, since 1993.
He is working toward a doctor of ministry degree at Texas Tech
University.    
     * Mary Jo Sims-Baden, dean of the chapel at West Virginia
Wesleyan College, Buckhannon, W.Va.. She is currently pursuing a 
doctor of ministry degree at Wesley Theological Seminary in
Washington, D.C.
