"take 5" takes
 Angel Award

by Nancye M. Willis*

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS)-- A United Methodist
Communications'(UMCom) radio public-service announcement campaign,
"take 5," recently received an Angel Award.
The awards are presented annually by Excellence in Media for
work identified with excellence and with making a contribution to
society.
The 60-second "take 5" spots, heard on almost 800 stations
nationwide, offer proactive messages suggesting specific actions
people can take--in just five minutes--to make their communities
better, kinder places.
     "Share a load ... smooth a road ... plant a seed ... lend a
hand ... make a plan ... fill a need .... take five little minutes
every day to grow one small kindness ... and send it someone's
way!" each spot invites musically. Each ends with: "A message
from the heart -- and the people -- of the United Methodist
Church."
According to UMCom staff member Bill Wolfe, who was
instrumental in developing the spots, the public service
announcements provide a way for churches to extend the caring hand
of ministry to the general listening audience and to increase
their own visibility at no cost.
More information on "take 5" is available by calling (800)
476-7766.
