United Methodist communicators
win DeRose/Hinkhouse awards

     BOSTON (UMNS) -- United Methodists won 14 of the 120 DeRose
Hinkhouse Awards given by the Religious Public Relations Council
here April 3 to recognize the work of professional communicators
of religion.
     The awards memorialize the late Victor DeRose and the late
Paul M. Hinkhouse, once leading lithographers in New York City,
who shared a concern for quality in religious communications.
     United Methodist winners of the award include:
Lynne DeMichelle of the Indiana Area, Hoosier United Methodist
News, award of merit for local and regional newspapers;
Barbara Dunlap-Berg of United Methodist Communications, "Advance
Toolbox," award of merit for special print materials;
Jeneane Jones of the United Methodist Board of Global Ministries,
"For the People of Rwanda and Burundi -- Harvest of Hope," best of
class in non-broadcast audio and video, and award of excellence in
promotional and informational video; and "Living the Life!
Congregations Answering Christ's Call to be Advocates," award of
merit for video, documentary/educational.
     Three awards to Pamela Crosby of United Methodist
Communications, were for "The Black College Fund," award of
excellence in promotional/educational video; "Africa University
Graduates in Action," award of merit for promotional/informational
video, and "Instrument of Hope -- the Ministerial Education Fund," 
award of merit in the same class.
     Elaine Justice of Emory University's Candler School of
Theology won two awards for "The Real Jesus" by Luke Johnson, best
of class for public relations/advertising and an award of
excellence for a public relations campaign.  Nancy Carter of the
United Methodist Board of Global Ministries won two awards of
merit for "General Board of Global Ministries Website" and
"Computerized AIDS Ministries (CAM) Website."
     Bill Wolf of United Methodist Communications for "Take 5:
Number 2 'Your Gifts'" won an award of merit for radio.
     Mary Edlund of the Minnesota Annual Conference won a
Shoestring Award for "Multiply God's Love."  The Shoestring Award
is a special recognition of an effective communication project
produced inexpensively.
     During the DeRose/Hinkhouse Awards program, the Rev. Dan
Gangler, host of the event, indicated there were 272 entries in
this year's competition.
