97141 Amendment B Nears Passage

                      by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Though numerous secular news organizations and advocacy
groups within the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) have reported that Amendment
B -- the commonly called "fidelity and chastity" amendment -- has passed,
the official tally maintained by the Office of the General Assembly (OGA)
shows the amendment still two votes shy of approval, as of March 27.

The consensus of those keeping informal track of the voting by
presbyteries is that the needed 87 votes have been reached. However, the
tally of formal ballot cards submitted by presbytery stated clerks to OGA
is 85 in the affirmative and 63 in the negative.

Anticipating that the two needed formal notification ballots will be
received during Easter weekend, General Assembly stated clerk the Rev.
Clifton Kirkpatrick said he expects to send a communication to all
congregations regarding the voting results early next week.

To ensure complete accuracy, the Presbyterian News Service will
continue its policy of reporting only those presbytery votes that have been
formally filed with OGA.
