SPOKANE, Wash.--The John Templeton Foundation has named Whitworth College
to its 1997-98 Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges, a designation
that recognizes colleges and universities that emphasize character building
as an integral part of the college experience. A total of 135 schools in 42
states were selected to this year's honor roll and will be featured in the
1997-98 "Honor Roll for Character-Building Colleges Reference Guide," which
will be available in the fall.

CALDWELL, Idaho--Retired president and CE0 of Albertson's Inc., Warren
McCain, and his wife, Bernie, have made a commitment of $1.5 million to
Albertson College of Idaho provided the college can acquire an additional
$1.5 million through donations from alumni and others. The final sum of $3
million will go toward the complete remodeling of the college's Kirkpatrick
Gymnasium into a new student center. The match by the college must be
raised by Dec. 15, 1997, $300,000 of which must come from alumni. The
remodeled structure will replace the current 40-year-old student union
building.

MEMPHIS, Tenn.--Rhodes College president James Daughdrill Jr. has been
elected to the board of directors of the Association of Presbyterian
Colleges and Universities (APCU). APCU is an association of 72 colleges and
universities across the U.S. related to the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A).
Southern institutions in the association include Tulsa, Davidson, Trinity,
Queens, Eckerd, Montreat, Agnes Scott, Belhaven, and Warren Wilson.
Daughdrill served as president and board member of the Association of
Presbyterian Colleges (APC) in 1976. APC was the predecessor of the APCU,
which was formed after the reunion of the Northern and Southern
Presbyterian churches during the 1980s.

ELKINS, W.Va.--An initial step toward the building of a new athletic and
physical education facility is being taken this spring at Davis & Elkins
College when ground is broken for a $250,000 structure containing the
provisions for service facilities, including restrooms, a training room and
meeting rooms for the Harpertown athletic fields. The Gates Tower gives
momentum to a strategic plan that includes as its next step the completion
of a new athletic and physical education center to be constructed behind
the current Hermanson Campus Center. The two buildings will be joined and
the campus center -- which currently houses the Iron Horse Fitness Center
and the college swimming pool -- will become part of the new athletic
complex.
