              "Year with Education" Plans Developed

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--Initial plans have been put in place for the Presbyterian 
Church (U.S.A.) special emphasis "1998: The Year with Education."  The 
theme of the special mission emphasis, established by last year's General 
Assembly, is "The Transformation of Hearts and Minds." 
 
     According to the Rev. Duncan Ferguson, associate director for the 
Higher Education Program Area in the National Ministries Division, the 
"Year with Education" will be highlighted in the 1998 "Mission Yearbook for 
Prayer & Study" and the Presbyterian Planning Calendar.  In addition, 
education-related projects will be featured in the next Extra Commitment 
Opportunity catalog and "Church & Society" magazine will devote its 
January/February 1998 issue to the "Year with Education." 
 
     The project team for the "Year with Education" is also developing 
several new resources to mark the special emphasis.  They include 
 
     *    a "Year with Education" Web page on the Internet 
     *    a "heritage piece" exploring the biblical, theological and 
          historical foundations of the church's mission in education 
     *    a planning guide for congregations to use during a planned 
          September 1998 emphasis on educational ministries in congregations 
     *    a video on educational mission 
     *    specific resources related to the five areas of educational 
          mission at the General 
          Assembly-level of the church: Christian education, global 
education, higher education, 
          public education and theological education. 
 
     The "Year with Education" will be the focus of the 1998 meeting of the 
Association of Presbyterian Church Educators and of a 1998 pre-General 
Assembly conference in Charlotte, N.C. 
 
     Plans will be further developed at a meeting of the "Year with 
Education" project team, April 27-29 in Dallas.
