                    National Presbyterian College Scholarship
                              Recipients Announced

                              by Jerry L. Van Marter

LOUISVILLE, Ky.--The Office of Financial Aid for Studies has announced that
124 incoming frosh from 58 participating Presbyterian Church-related
colleges and unversities have been granted National Presbyterian College
Scholarships (NPCS) for the 1997-98 academic year.

The scholarships, based on academic achievement and need, range from
$200 to $1,400 per academic year and are renewable for each undergraduate
year. Including renewed grants to students who received them in prior
years, a total of 646 students at PC(USA)-related colleges and unversities
will receive NPCS grants next year.

Tim McCallister, associate for financial aid for studies, told the
Presbyterian News Service that the partnership between his office and the
colleges and universities "is what makes the program work so well." During
the current academic year, the Office for Financial Aid for Studies has
committed $238,000 to the program and the participating schools have
contributed $536,000.

"I can't say how much we value the cooperation between the General
Assembly and the colleges and universities," McCallister said. "This
program would be a shell without the financial commitment from the
schools."

Grant recipients are selected by an eight-member committee of
representatives from participating schools, who serve on a rotating basis.
Selection committee members for the 1997-98 grants came from Barber-Scotia
College, Davidson College, Hanover College, Hastings College, Pikeville
College, Rhodes College, Rocky Mountain College and Tusculum College.

Selection criteria include ACT or SAT scores, high school transcripts,
extracurricular activities, community and church involvement, pastor and
high school counselors' endorsements and verified financial need.
Applicants must be members of the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) and U.S.
citizens or permanent residents of the U.S.

Deadline for applications is December 1 of each year. Information
about the NPCS program is included in the July Info-Pak each year and in
the Presbyterian Planning Calendar. Interested persons may also call
McCallister at (502) 569-5776 or program administrator Mary Folsom at (502)
