Four students given scholarships
recognizing leadership in the church

     NASHVILLE, Tenn. (UMNS) -- Four United Methodist college
students have been recognized for leadership exhibited in the
church and for the potential of continued leadership in the
future.
     Each is being given a $500 scholarship by the denomination's
National Youth Ministry Organization (NYMO) and the Office of
Loans and Scholarships of the churchwide Board of Higher Education
and Ministry.
     Deedra Tainpeah of Oklahoma and Victor K. Acquaah-Harrison of
Maryland are being given Richard S. Smith scholarships.  Named in
honor of a retired staff member of the churchwide Board of
Discipleship in Nashville, the scholarships are awarded annually
to United Methodist ethnic minority undergraduate students.
     Erin M. Carroll of Ohio and Kristi M. Messick of Arizona are
being given David W. Self Scholarships, named after another former
Board of Discipleship staff member, now deceased.
     Tainpeah, 18, plans to attend the University of Oklahoma,
Norman, Okla..  She is the daughter of JoAnn Tainpeah and the late
James Tainpeah, and is a member of the Botone Memorial United
Methodist Church in the Oklahoma Indian Missionary Conference. 
She has been active in church activities at the district,
conference, jurisdictional and national levels.
     Acquaah-Harrison, 17, plans to attend American University in
Washington. He is the son of the Rev. Victor and Cecilia Acquaah-
Harrison and is an active member of St. Paul United Methodist
Church, Burlin, Md. He has been chairperson of the Peninsula-
Delaware Conference Council on Youth Ministries and is a member of
the NYMO Steering Committee.
     Carroll plans to attend Ohio University in Athens.  She is
the daughter of Charles and Bonnie Carroll and attends Canaanville
United Methodist Church in  Athens.  A jurisdictional
representative to NYMO, she was a lay delegate to the British
Methodist Conference this summer in Blackpool, England.
     Messick plans to attend Arizona State University.  She is the
daughter of Larry and Connie Messick and a member of St. Michael's
United Methodist Church, Havasu, Ariz. During the past year she
has traveled with an "Up With People" music group.
