Ordination of Methodist women to be
topic for Historical Society meeting

     
     "Ordination of Women in the Methodist Tradition" will be the
theme for a meeting of the United Methodist Historical Society in
Boston Oct. 3-5.
     The weekend meeting will conclude the church's year-long
celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Anna Howard
Shaw, the first woman ordained in the Methodist tradition.
     Hosting the event will be Boston University, the Anna Howard
Shaw Center of the Boston University School of Theology, and the
New England Conference Commission on Archives and History.
     Presentations will be given by Bishop Susan Murch Morrison of
the Albany, N.Y., Area; the Rev. Barbara Troxell of Garrett-
Evangelical Seminary, Evanston, Ill.; Dennis C. Dickerson of
Williams College, Williamstown, Mass., historiographer of the
African Methodist Episcopal Church; the Rev. Walter G. Muelder,
dean-emeritus of Boston University School of Theology; and A.Lee
Carpenter of Wellesley, Mass., an authority on the life of Anna
Howard Shaw and a member of the Shaw Center Advisory Board.
     The first public report on the findings of a four-year study
on the retention of clergy women, recently concluded by the Anna
Howard Center, will be made by Margaret S. Wiborg and Beth
Collier.  Wiborg is director of the Shaw Center and Collier is a
Shaw scholar from Decatur, Ga.
     New officers will be installed for the Historical Society. 
Serving four year terms will be: president, John E. Sims, St.
Joseph, Ill.; vice president, James W. Holsinger Jr., Lexington,
Ky.; secretary, Nancie Peacocke Fadeley, Eugene, Ore.; and
treasurer, Millard W. Mead, Lakeside, Ohio.
     Completing her term as president will be C. Faith Richardson,
Newton, Mass.
