Advance launches
50th celebration

                    by United Methodist News Service

A special celebration during the General Council on
Ministries' October meeting in Pittsburgh will launch the
observance of the 50th anniversary of The Advance.
Guest speakers will preach in local churches on Oct. 26. The
evening program will include a dinner and premiere of a new video,
"A Day of New Beginnings." Joe Walker and Howard Brinton, former
Advance directors, will be honored.
Other activities throughout the year will include the various
jurisdictional and annual conference events, unveiling a web site
on the internet and publishing the Around the World in 50 Recipes
cookbook.
A variety of promotional resources are available. One
resource, for example, "A Guide to the 50th Anniversary of the
Advance for Christ and His Church," offers 50 ways to celebrate.
Aimed at both individuals and groups, the suggestions include
holding a bikeathon and donating proceeds toward bicycles for
pastors in Uganda; sending money that would have been spent on a
new Easter dress or suit to a summer camp for refugee children in
Jerusalem; or offering surplus garden produce at the church and
using the donations for a food production project in the
Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire).
For more information on resources and 50th anniversary
events, contact the Advance office, 475 Riverside Dr., Room 1400,
New York, NY 10115 or contact a jurisdictional Advance officer.
