HealthFlex summit looks at federal regulation,
future of the plan, new dental coverage

by Julie Haugh*

The fourth HealthFlex Summit meeting Sept. 12-13 in Rosemont, Ill., brought together representatives of all the conferences in
HealthFlex, the United Methodist Board of Pension and Health Benefits-sponsored health program.
The 45 conference representatives and board staff discussed issues and talked about future directions for the plan. An amendment
to a new federal law, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), as it impacts church plans was discussed,
as were the effects of Medicare Secondary Payor regulations on retired clergy who resume work.
The board also presented a new dental plan that will be available to the broadest section of participants at the most reasonable
cost.
"This was a transitional summit; participants were able to get a good sense of the plan and how it is developing to respond to
their needs," said, Bob Preusch, service manager for HealthFlex.
The summit gives conference representatives an opportunity "to impact the decisions that are going to affect them. This type of
open discussion is healthy, and really directs the actual implementation of the plan," Preusch said.
