    Clarification

by the Office of the General Assembly

Additional actions of the 209th General Assembly (1997) directed to the
whole church:

The 209th General Assembly offered a word of counsel to the church and
our culture that the procedure known as intact dilation and extraction
(commonly called "partial birth" abortion) of a baby who could live outside
the womb is of grave moral concern that should be considered only if the
mother's physical life is endangered by the pregnancy. (alternate
resolution to Overture 97-65)

Support current efforts to highlight the persecution of Christians
around the world in the framework of a full concern for all forms of
religious persecution, and recognize the special concern of the church for
persecution of Christians is best expressed in a context that promotes
open, serious interaction among religious communities. (35.0906)

Reaffirm the commitment of the 199th General Assembly (1987) to partner
churches in areas of major Muslim populations, supporting their search for
full religious freedom to witness to their faith, working for freedom to
change one's faith community, and for equality of citizenship for all
persons in the societies in which they live. (35.0909)
