AUSTRALIA: MELBOURNE DIOCESE CALLS FOR LEGISLATION FOR WOMEN BISHOPS

(Muriel Porter, Church Times) Melbourne Diocese has become the second
Australian diocese to call for legislation to permit women bishops. The
Diocese of Adelaide was the fist, earlier this year. At Melbourne
Diocesan Synod earlier this month, the vote was almost unanimous, though
the Archbishop of Melbourne, the Most Revd Dr Keith Rayner, sounded a
note of caution about the timing. Five Australian dioceses do not yet
admit women as priests. Plans are in hand for a debate on women bishops
at the General Synod in Adelaide next February.
