Claremont School of Theology
accepts youngest students ever

by United Methodist News Service

Claremont (Calif.) School of Theology, a graduate theological school of the
United Methodist Church, has accepted the youngest students in the school’s
138 year history.
Three California youths aged 11 through 16, received one-year’s free tuition
in the theological school’s master of divinity program as a prize for their
winning sermons in the first "This Little Light of Mine" future ministers
competition.
The competition was designed to "showcase" the preaching talents of young
people.
	Jonathan Edward Ter Meer, 11, of Chino; Anthony Butler Bates, 15, of Pomona;
and Nicole Campbell, 16, of Claremont, won enrollment in the theological
school as part of the institution’s celebration of 40 years in Claremont.
The seminary began in San Fernando, Calif., as the Maclay School of Theology
in 1885 and was the School of Religion at the University of Southern
California for many years before moving to its present location at Claremont.
Jerry Garber, director of institutional advancement said the winners were
offered a prize of one year’s tuition waver in the master’s of divinity
program if they decide they are called to ministry and whenever they enroll at
Claremont.
"The free tuition award would serve as an added incentive for the three top
entrants. We want young people to consider the ministry as a viable career
option," said the Rev. Robert Edgar, president of the school of theology.
