Washington, D.C., will be available on the NCC's Web
Site: www.ncccusa.org.

The 270-member General Assembly is the primary
legislative body of the National Council of
Churches, whose Protestant and Orthodox member
denominations (communions) have a total 52 million
congregants. On Nov. 12, the NCC will welcome its
34th member communion, the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of
India.

Among resources available on the Web Site will
be:

 * An overview of each day's business along with
full documentation.
 * Profiles of the NCC's 1998-99 officers and
key Assembly leadership.
 * A profile of the Mar Thoma Syrian Church of
India.

Included will be items reflecting the broad
range of issues to come before the Assembly:

 * Religious freedom and religious persecution
abroad.
 * The churches' response: to the changing U.S.
religious landscape...to people with
disabilities...to public schools...and to the deaf
community.
 * Gains, inequities and problems of clergy
women over the past decade.
 * Sports mascots that parody Native Americans.
 * A plea for release of Native American
activist Leonard Peltier from prison.
 * What shape future U.S. ecumenical cooperation
might take.
 * Action against anti-personnel landmines
(Guest Speaker: Jody Williams, 1997 Nobel Peace
Prize Laureate).
 * Recognition awards to eight state/local
ecumenical/interfaith bodies.
 * A report on the Assembly's visit to the U.S.
Holocaust Museum and program on "Protestant and
Orthodox Christian Rescuers and Resisters."
