Virginia pastor is 1997 distinguished
United Methodist Church evangelist

by United Methodist News Service

The Rev. Stephen A. Rhodes, a pastor in Falls Church, Va., has been named
1997 Distinguished Evangelist of the United Methodist Church.
The award was announced during the annual banquet of the Foundation for
Evangelism, Nov. 1 at Lake Junaluska, N.C.
Rhodes, pastor of Culmore United Methodist Church since 1991, is the 48th
person to be inducted into United Methodism’s Hall of Fame for Evangelism.
The foundation, an affiliate of the United Methodist Board of Discipleship,
established the Distinguished Evangelist Award in 1989.
It’s mission is to "promote, encourage and provide resources for responsible
evangelism, enabling the United Methodist Church to bring persons into a
personal relationship with Jesus Christ and his disciples."
According to Paul Ervin, executive vice president of the foundation, Rhodes
was selected because his ministry of evangelism reaches out to a multicultural
community and congregation. Culmore Church is an International Christian
congregation with membership from 31 countries and staff from Chile, Korea,
the Philippines, Puerto Rico and Thailand.
Ervin said, Rhodes’ style of preaching is "warm, caring and welcoming. His
leadership style opens opportunities for multicultural and intergenerational
involvement."
Accepting the award, Rhodes said, the congregation represents "God’s
multicultured mission to all the nations." The importance of this award, he
said, "lies in recognition of this precious gift God is presenting to us in
these multicultural parishes. It is a gift that I believe the church needs."
