Six colleges named ‘Most efficient,’
one university named to top 50

by United Methodist News Service

Six United Methodist-related colleges have been listed among the nation’s 10
"most efficient" liberal arts colleges.
Another United Methodist school is ranked ninth in the nation’s top 50
universities.
The six United Methodist-related "most efficient" colleges are Wofford
College, Spartanburg, S.C., ranked number 1; Birmingham-Southern College,
Birmingham, Ala., ranked 4th; Hendrix College, Conway, Ark., ranked 5th;
Millsaps College, Jackson, Miss., ranked 6th; Illinois Wesleyan University,
Bloomington, Ill., ranked 7th; and Willamette University, Salem, Ore., ranked
8th.
The colleges are listed online in U.S. News & World Reports’ 1998 edition of
America’s Best Colleges.
The magazine’s editors picked schools as "most efficient" when they provide
quality education while spending less on instruction and student services than
other comparable schools. An institution is listed under "best values" when it
is above average academically and costs "considerably less" than other schools
with financial aid taken into account.
The editors surveyed 1,400 accredited four-year colleges to compile data to
help students and parents compare schools when making decisions on where to
enroll. The survey addressed academic reputation, freshmen and graduate
retention rates, faculty resources, student selectivity, financial resources,
student academic success and alumni giving.
A new category, "value added," shows how well a school is educating students,
regardless of their academic achievements before college. This category was
added because the editors and officials in higher education, "believe it is
important to measure the quality of education provided by an institution, not
the prior achievements of those who enroll."
"Our ultimate goal is not to give an absolute measure of the ‘best college’
for any and all students, but to give students and their parents a set a tools
to help them make a complex decision," the editors said.
Emory University, Atlanta, was the only United Methodist-related institution
to make the list of top 50 universities. It ranked ninth.
Using data compiled from 228 national universities, editors chose the 50 that
most met the criteria. They assessed universities that offer a full range of
majors as well as master’s and doctor’s degrees, place strong emphasis on
research, and receive federal money to support that research.
